In short

  • Thai Imperial @ Taman Pelangi is at 70, Jalan Serampang, Taman Pelangi, about 10 minutes by Grab from the CIQ checkpoint.
  • The two-hour full body aromatherapy massage lets you pick from four scents, and the masseurs check in on your comfort partway through.
  • You can request a specific masseur on the two-hour massages. Numbers 103, 31 and 53 are the ones worth asking for.
  • Book on WhatsApp ahead of time, especially on Saturdays, when slots go quickly. Bookings can be made in English.
  • Ask for the price on WhatsApp when you book. The two-hour aromatherapy is not on the shop's published menu.

I have been to Thai Imperial @ Taman Pelangi several times now. It is one of my regular go-tos whenever I am in JB for a long massage, and I keep coming back for the same reason: the two-hour full body aromatherapy session is consistently good. The place does not try to be fancy. It is dark, it is comfortable, and the masseurs know what they are doing. For a Singaporean crossing the Causeway for a proper reset, that is usually exactly what you need.

Getting there from the checkpoint

The shop is at 70, Jalan Serampang, Taman Pelangi. From the CIQ checkpoint it is roughly a 10 minute Grab ride. That is close enough that you are not wasting half your day in transit, but far enough that you are out of the immediate crush around the checkpoint malls. If you are coming in from Singapore on a weekend, factor in the Causeway queue before you even think about the ride. Once you are through, the journey to the shop itself is short.

Booking ahead matters here

Do not plan on walking in. Book ahead, especially on Saturdays. The shop fills up very quickly on a Saturday, and it is harder still if you want a specific masseur.

The WhatsApp booking is easy. Their customer service replied to me in under 10 minutes. You send a message, they confirm the slot, and that is it. Request your preferred masseur at the same time you book rather than asking on the day.

If you are getting the two-hour massage, you can request specific masseurs by number. The ones I would recommend are 103, 31 and 53. Their pressure, their technique, and the way they check in on your comfort midway through the session are all excellent, and that last part is what separates a masseur who is paying attention from one working through a routine.

What the place is like

The atmosphere is chill and dark. This is not a bright, clinical spa. The lighting is low and the mood is calm from the moment you walk in. There is a dedicated footwash area before you are taken through to the massage room, which is a good touch after a day of walking around JB or sitting in traffic.

The room itself was dark and comfortable. The aircon runs a little on the cold side, so tell the masseur if you want the temperature adjusted. Better to say something before the massage starts than to lie there shivering through the first hour.

The treatment itself

I have only ever had the two-hour full body aromatherapy massage here, so I cannot speak for the other treatments on the menu. You choose from four scents. When I went they were rose, lavender, ginger and a plain unscented option. I went with the rose oil, and it smelt great.

The first half of the session works on your back. The pressure was well judged, firm enough to be doing something without tipping into the kind of force that makes you tense up against it. The masseur checked in partway through to make sure the pressure was right.

There is one downside, and it is specific. The bed was not that comfortable around the jaw area, roughly 45 minutes in. You are face down, and the headrest simply did not agree with my jaw. It was not unbearable, but it was noticeable. Around the halfway mark the back is finished and you get flipped over, so it resolves itself. If you are sensitive around the jaw or neck, you could try asking for an extra towel or cushion for that area before they start. I have not tried it myself, but it seems like a reasonable thing to ask for.

Who this suits

This is a good option if you want a long, uninterrupted massage without any fuss. The two-hour format gives the masseur time to go slow and be thorough. It is not a quick rubdown before you head back to Singapore, it is a proper session where you lose track of time.

It also suits people who are comfortable in a darker, quieter environment. You come for the massage, you get a good one, and you leave. If you are after a five-star wellness retreat with a lounge and a tea ceremony, this is not that. If you want a reliable, comfortable two hours of bodywork in JB, it is a strong choice.

Practical notes for your visit

The shop opens at 12:00 PM every day. Monday to Thursday it closes at 1:00 AM, and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 AM. Those late hours make it workable if you want to cross over in the afternoon, have a meal, and take the massage before heading back. The later slots are also the ones most likely to be gone, so book.

Bookings are in English over WhatsApp, which is worth saying because it is the thing most people crossing for the first time worry about. I have never had to switch languages to get a slot confirmed.

On price, ask when you book. I have not kept a record of what I paid for the two-hour aromatherapy, and I would rather point you at the shop than quote you a figure I am not certain of. It is a normal question, everybody asks it, and their customer service answers quickly. Confirm at the same time whether the masseur you want is free.

The verdict

I would recommend Thai Imperial @ Taman Pelangi. What it is, is a dependable place for a long aromatherapy massage with masseurs who actually check in on you. The jaw discomfort in the face-down position is a minor flaw and it does not last the whole session. The late hours, the quick WhatsApp replies and the consistency of the masseurs make it a solid regular stop.

Book ahead, request your masseur, and ask them to adjust the aircon before you settle in. That is the formula I have used every time, and it has not let me down yet.

About this review

Everything above is based on my own personal experience as a paying customer across several visits. It is not sponsored, and I have no affiliation with the shop. Your session may well differ: the masseur, the day, and how busy they are all change it, and one person's account is not a systematic review.

Treatments, prices, opening hours and the scent selection all change over time. Confirm anything that matters to you directly with the shop on WhatsApp when you book.
