Booking a JB massage on WhatsApp from Singapore: the number, the message, and what to ask

Many massage shops in Johor Bahru have no online booking system. They have a phone with WhatsApp on it, and someone at the counter who answers it between customers. That is fine once you know how it works, and it is the difference between walking into a quiet shop at the time you wanted and crossing the Causeway to find every room taken. This is how to book a JB massage from a Singapore phone, and what to ask so the trip does not go wrong.

Get the number right first

The most common reason a booking message never arrives is the number format. Malaysian mobile numbers are usually written in their local form, starting with 01, like 012-345 6789. Saved like that on a Singapore phone, WhatsApp will usually treat it as a Singapore number and fail to find the shop.

The fix is to use the international form. Drop the leading 0 and add +60, the country code for Malaysia:

• Local form: 012-345 6789
• International form: +60 12-345 6789

The first message

The button fills in a short opening message for you:

Hi [shop name]! I found you on RelaxJB. I'd like to book a massage. Could you share your availability and pricing? Thank you!

That works, but you will get a faster and more useful answer if you add the details before sending. A busy shop answers the message it can act on first. Something like this:

Hi, I'd like to book a 90 minute Thai massage for 2 people this Saturday at 3pm. Do you have availability, and what is the price for 90 minutes? Thank you.

Treatment, duration, date, time, number of people. Everything a shop needs to check its rooms and therapists in one go.

Five questions worth asking

1. The price for exactly what you want. Ask for the price of the specific treatment and duration, not a general "how much for massage". Menus you find online for JB shops are often chain-wide, out of date, or both. In our own checks we have found menus attached to the wrong shop entirely. A price the shop has written in the chat is the one that counts.

2. The latest start time, if you are going late. Many JB shops are open past midnight, but a listed closing time is when the doors shut. A two-hour session needs to start well before it. 3. How they take payment. Payment options vary by shop, so ask rather than assume, especially if you are planning to pay by card. Our guide for Singaporeans covers cash and card in more detail.

4. Whether they can arrange transport. Some shops, often the larger ones further from the city centre, will arrange a pick-up from the checkpoint. It is usually informal rather than advertised, so it only happens if you ask.

5. Whether you can request a therapist. Some shops let you ask for a specific therapist. At Thai Imperial @ Taman Pelangi, for example, you can request a masseur by number on the two-hour massages. If you have a favourite from a previous visit, say so when you book, and book further ahead on weekends.

What reply speed to expect

Reply times vary a lot, from minutes to hours, and depend on how busy the counter is. Where we have confirmed a shop's booking number ourselves, we note how quickly it replied on the listing. Thai Imperial @ Taman Pelangi, for instance, takes bookings in English and replied within about 10 minutes. If you have not heard back within a few hours of a weekend booking, try calling or pick another shop, rather than turning up and hoping.

When a shop has no WhatsApp

103 of the places we list have no WhatsApp number on their listing. For those:

• Call the number on the listing, if there is one. Johor Bahru landlines use the area code 07, so from Singapore you dial +60 7 and then the rest of the number, without the leading 0.
• Walk in, if it is a quiet weekday or a short treatment like foot reflexology, where waiting times tend to be shorter.
• Pick a nearby shop that does take WhatsApp. Every area page on RelaxJB, such as City Square, lists every place in the area, with a Book on WhatsApp button on each one that has a number.

Keep the chat

Once a shop confirms, keep the conversation. It records the time, the treatment and the price you were quoted, which is useful if there is any confusion at the counter. If your plans change, message the shop as early as you can to cancel or move the slot. It is a small courtesy, and it keeps the number friendly for next time.

The short version

Use the +60 number, say exactly what you want in the first message, get the price for that treatment and duration in writing, and keep the chat. It takes two minutes before you leave Singapore, and it is the easiest way to make sure the trip ends in a massage rather than a queue.
